BIPOC Parenting Series: Sonul's Story

Sonul's Family - BIPOC Parenting Series

As a community-focused company, Kabrita USA strives to be inclusive and to continuously celebrate diversity. In honor of Black History Month, Kabrita USA is featuring a BIPOC Parenting Series, for the entire month of February. The BIPOC Parenting Series centres BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) parents’ experiences. Our goal is to enhance greater representation of BIPOC parents in the media, as well as to amplify BIPOC voices and stories.

Today, we are sharing Sonul’s story about being a first generation BIPOC parent in the USA and paving the way to create opportunities for her children.

Sonul's Story:

As a 1st generation BIPOC parent raising my 2 young boys in the USA, one of the most rewarding aspects of parenting is seeing that my children are the truest depiction of the American Dream. Our parents came to this country as Indian immigrants with a few dollars & a dream. They tirelessly raised us by working endless hours, facing inequality, racism, & hate to pay for our higher education to open doors while simultaneously immersing us in our Indian ethnicity.

As South Asians with a drive to learn, we took the opportunity afforded by our parents sacrifice, and earned professional careers as well as becoming culturally proud Indian Americans. Now even more opportunities are available for our children. They are able to live in diverse communities and continue to grow in a culturally rich environment, all ultimately provided for by their grandparents.

Watching your child flourish in a community of diversity that we as individuals helped to create is hard to put into words. We did what our parents thought was impossible, but we learned from them through example. We strive to replicate the same.

Reaching our children & resonating with them through our experiences will pave the way for even greater accomplishments, self-identity, & overall equality awareness in their future. Much of this will be in the hands of our children as they grow into adulthood, but it’s up to us to instill every ounce of intention to guide them to achieve. It all starts at home.
